Building Better Habits
Ditching the “All or Nothing” Mentality and Mastering the Basics
Let’s explore how to build sustainable habits by starting small, using strategies like habit stacking, and focusing on mastering the basics rather than chasing trends.
The “All or Nothing” Trap
The belief that you have to go all-in or it’s not worth doing is one of the biggest roadblocks to building new habits. In reality, success comes from consistency, not perfection. If you skip a workout or indulge in your favorite dessert, that doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It’s just one moment in a bigger picture.
Why “all or nothing” doesn’t work:
- It creates unnecessary pressure.
- Small setbacks feel like total failures, making it hard to bounce back.
- It’s not sustainable for real life, which is full of unexpected events and challenges.
Instead, aim for progress, not perfection. Remember: a single workout or a single healthy meal might seem small, but over time, those small efforts build momentum.
Habit Stacking and Starting Small
When you’re trying to create a new habit, the idea of overhauling your entire lifestyle can feel overwhelming. That’s where habit stacking comes in. This method involves focusing on one habit or change at a time instead of trying to change everything about your health all at once, for example:
- Nutrition: instead of meal prepping, tracking macros, and cooking at home instead of eating out, you simply focus on eating breakfast. Prioritize starting your day with protein, healthy carbs & fats, and a fruit or vegetable. Get into a habit of doing that, find a go-to breakfast that works for you, eat breakfast when you wake up before you have caffeine or start your work day. THEN add in the next thing! Focusing on one habit at a time and building more as you go.
- Exercise: rather than planning to go to the gym 6x per week, plan for 2 good lifting days (or 2 classes, or 2 runs – whatever your workout is!). Start with twice per week showing up to the gym. Once you are in a good rhythm of that, maybe you add in going for walks 2x per week. Then maybe it becomes a daily walk. 2x per week at the gym for a year is more beneficial than 6x per week for 2 weeks and then burning out and never going again!
Start small. Habits are like muscles; they grow stronger with repetition. Focus on manageable actions that don’t require huge amounts of time or energy. Over time, these small changes snowball into significant results. Not only does this prioritize consistency, but it allows you to build trust and confidence with yourself that you can actually reach your goals when the goals are in touch with reality.
Focus on the Basics
With the rise of social media trends and “biohacks,” it’s easy to get distracted by flashy diets, supplements, or complicated workout routines. But the truth is, most people don’t need anything fancy to see results—they just need to focus on doing the basics well.
The basics of nutrition:
- Eat more whole, minimally processed foods.
- Prioritize protein, & actually eat fruits and vegetables every day.
- Stay hydrated—drink at least 64oz of water every day.
- Don’t skip meals; aim for balanced eating patterns that keep your energy steady.
The basics of exercise:
- Move your body regularly—this can be as simple as walking or taking the stairs.
- Strength train 2–3 times per week to build muscle and support long-term health.
- Get enough rest and recovery to avoid burnout.
- Find an activity you enjoy—consistency matters more than intensity.
Trends come and go, but the basics never fail. Mastering them creates a strong foundation that supports long-term success.
Building Momentum
It’s easy to overestimate what you can do in a day and underestimate what you can do in a year. Forming habits takes time, but by embracing small, consistent changes, you’ll set yourself up for sustainable success.
If you mess up, don’t let guilt or frustration derail you. Every day – every moment, every meal – is an opportunity to start fresh and keep moving forward.
